Kris served in the Air Force before settling in the Tampa area, where she attended the University of South Florida. Kris earned two Bachelor’s degrees in Criminology and Psychology. Later, while raising her daughter, Mariah, she earned two additional degrees: a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling and an MBA. She went on to work in education, helping to reach children who learn differently.
Working with these kids was one of the reasons Kris decided to run for local office. She was frustrated with the lack of resources available to the families she served, and she wanted to make a positive impact within her own community. Kris’s mother ran her first campaign: Lake Wales City Commission.
Kris won the seat by just 33 votes. Her victory was a shocking upset in local politics—and it caught the attention of the local Sheriff, who had publicly endorsed Kris’ opponent.
Just weeks after Kris was sworn into office, her daughter approached her with heartbreaking information: she had been sexually assaulted.
Kris did what any parent would do when their child was hurt: she reported it to the police. That turned out to be the worst mistake she could have made.
